Brisbane has released the draft environmental impact report for an extensive redevelopment of the land west of Highway 101 that lies upwind of the Candlestick sailing area. They have allowed for a long 120 day comment period for those who believe that corrections or additions are necessary. The wind study generally predicts 5-10% decrease in wind speed and turbulence increase of 10-30% (higher closer to shore) in the south portion of the sailing area and the draft concludes that the impacts are less than significant. I haven't reviewed it in detail but it looks like it includes analysis of the Brisbane project and also of the plan to add tall buildings in SF on the east side of the freeway (Executive Park). The impacts you see in the north area are tied to the SF project. The images from Appendix J probably tell the story best. R value relates to wind speed while TI (turbulence intensity) relates to turbulence or gustiness (but cannot capture variability of direction).

The Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the Baylands is now available for public review and comment. Hard copies of the document are available at City Hall and the Library, with paper copies available for purchase at City Hall for $25. Green options include CDs and thumb drives with the entire DEIR copied onto them available at no cost. The DEIR will also be available electronically on the City Website via the Baylands DEIR page: http://brisbaneca.org/baylands-deir.

Damn useful information. Looking at the historic wind speed and direction (via archive), Appears prior to 1999 and subsequent development of the east of 101 condo and business office complex winds were more westerly. Further development on the eastern shore of 101 is not windsurfer friendly.

The old Candlestick sensor was on a building WEST of HWY 101. (not
sure where the newer sensor is but i think it's also west of 101).
So the buildings east of HWY 101 would not have affected the sensor readings.
However, as a long time sailor of Stick (since about 1995) I think the new buildings east of 101 DID affect the actual wind at the launch and probably caused less sailing days when the wind is more northerly.
I think the westerly winds shown in the 1998/99 archive were more a symptom of the El Nino cycle during that peroid (also resulting in more fog).

As per the two extensive developements proposed for west of HWY 101, it looks like the 160ft hotel(s) would have the most impact to sailing (especially if the sports stadium is built as in plan "B" and multiple hotels are built). What sports team is talking about Brisbane??
