Newspapers are usually free. For years the paper I worked for let the delivery people keep all the subscription money. I heard they now match your money with a fifty percent addition to the delivery people's take so free ones actually cost them less than paid subscriptions.
They make money on ads. The price they sell ads for depends on the circulation. Now do you know why they give them out for free?
They lean left and right to increase readership in their market.
The editor once said that he stacks up the complaint letters on his desk about bias. When the stack accusing him of being a liberal is the same height as the stack accusing him of conservative bias, he figures he has it about right.
About bias, he also said that his only job is to make money for his employers, or he will need to find another job.
We were owned by Disney but still ran articles condemning them over dumb stuff like the Littlest Mermaid not wearing a swimsuit top because our market was so conservative. |
