I'm looking for opinions on Gold Beach/Pistol River winds for August.

Mark, is that you?
Domond here.
August can be good, but only if Gorge is hot, so the coast can clear a bit for winds to blow, similar to the needs of Waddell.
I've been up 3 times in early August, and most days blew in the PM's, but foggy and sometimes surf in the mornings.
But, Floras can blow by noon or so, meaning a clear day with NW winds.

Zirtaeb,

Nope, not Mark, that's most likely SFAirwave.
But hi to Mark too. I'm going to need a bag this spring. See ya soon.

Thanks for the Gold Beach details. I'd not thought about the lake option, if the coast off. Family is renting a house for a couple of weeks right during the peak of the SF Bay season.
So, I'm trying to decide about committing to a trip up.

Kinda depends how much you like to sail in wave conditions.
You can plan your whole vacation based on wind conditions when you get there. Lots of sailors just hit the coast until the fog pushes too far in, then drive the 5 hours inland to sail in flat water, or swell conditions.
You got, within 45 minutes, Florence, FaceRock, Floras, surfing at the bridge S on the way to Pistol, Cape, and Pistol.
Some sailors sail right in GoldBeach.
You know Crissy can be dead on the inside in August, making for slog city, so it' nothing to wait for.

@zirtaeb,

Good input thanks.
It's been a decade since I have sailed Pistol. The previous decade I used to show up about once a year for a week of vacation, but usually in early July. Even then it was like every other spot, sometimes you get it, sometimes you don't. But it is an awesome sailing spot. I have sailed at the jetty in town and also the Cape.
But because it is a pretty long drive, sailing in August has me concerned as to what to expect, just as you say with Crissy and the rest of the C Coast. That time of year the Bay, the River, and the Gorge, as you know, are full on.

But, since the family has a trip planned it might be worth the risk.
I think I'll keep an eye on it and head that way if it looks good.

Watch air temps at the Gorge. If it's hot out east, and very warm at HoodRiver, the coast should blow in the PM's.
If there are high clouds over the eastern Gorge, and HoodRiver is 60 or below and showing Portland fog, perhaps a family get together and surfing is the call.
I hate the long slogs at August Crissy, where the N side is 5.0 and the wind suddenly dies right at 4:30.

Yep,
I've had a good many sessions that have been a 4.0 on the N side of Gate while Crissy leaves you swimming from mid channel no matter the sail size.
