I've sailed the Arm - it can go from ripping flat water to overhead swell in 40 minutes flat once the bore pushes through. Current is fierce and if you fall in, it's like being on a conveyor belt. The window for sailing is relatively tight because when it switches to outbound the next stop is China and there's no rescue options.
Local sailors are a tight knit bunch and the definition of hard core. I think the second guy climbing down to the launch is Thor Kallestad. He once told me that "sailing the Arm is like the Gorge on steroids" and he was right. |
