Oh I'm clear and not swayed. Welfare recipients are the least of my worries.

Individually, yes. But now that about half the U.S. population qualifies for it, it's collectively a HUGE problem, one the country may not recover from until another Bill Clinton or a Republican comes along to reverse our untimely slide towards socialism just as most of the world is seeing it for the failure it is and trying to emerge from it.

You can't make this stuff up!

Iso sez: "There's no gentle or nice way to say this: Why am I not surprised that, apparently, one of these ignorant socialists advocates raising the minimum wage?"

Iso sez: "But now that about half the U.S. population qualifies for it [welfare], it's collectively a HUGE problem...

Is this the definition of cognitive dissonance?

Why do you think an increase in minimum wage is being suggested? In part, to get people off of welfare.

Holy non sequitur Bat Man.

By the way, I disagree in your "about half of the U.S. population qualifies for it" statement. Got anything to back that up?

Really? So raising the minimum wage will make employers hire more people.
Wow, never heard that one before.
If you have any kind of job, no matter how low the pay is, it's a very hard uphill climb to qualify, and if you quit your job to qualify, that doesn't work, you have to get laid off. It's not impossible, but almost.
The most common work requirement is looking for work, or attending training courses, neither of which is having a job.

It never ceases to amaze me how people fail to actually read. Here comes NW, scold for language:

Of course, nobody said anything like that. What an article I posted said is that some hourly employees at the minimum wage make so little money that they qualify for foodstamps. So a low minimum wage means that the public subsidizes employees of places like Walmart--by picking up some of their food costs and health care. While Walmart makes more. Went right by the righty from the Central coast.

No one has said what you postulate - That is your own theory. Wow, have you been hiding under a rock? Ever heard of the working poor? Like employees at McDonald's and Walmart? We as tax payers are subsidizing the employees of Walmart and McDonald's through welfare because the employer won't pay a living wage. If the employers paid their employees more, then the employees would not need welfare and I would not have to subsidize Walmart and McDonald's. But that's just me. Wow, you must like subsidizing corporations with tax money. I guess you are one of those people who thinks socialism and wealth redistribution is a good thing.

"Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest private sector employer, is also the biggest consumer of taxpayer supported aid. According to Florida Congressman Alan Grayson, in many states, Wal-Mart employees are the largest group of Medicaid recipients. They are also the single biggest group of food stamp recipients. Wal-mart’s "associates" are paid so little, according to Grayson, that they receive $1,000 on average in public assistance. These amount to massive taxpayer subsidies for private companies."

How does that explain Jason the lobster-eating surfer dude? Or Pelosi's position that the taxpayers owe him the right to pursue his dream? If she and Obama had paired up in the 1980s, we'd have several million windsurfer dudes pursuing their dreams on the dole.

As a business owner I think I'd have a problem paying someone minimum wage regardless of skills. I could see some high school kid but some adult, but I couldn't do it. I could argue that their lack of education or skills is not my problem, but it's hard to do when you see someone is barely scraping by while employed. I'd rather try to lift them up if they display a desire to work hard and learn. I will admit that some people are their own worst enemies. I have skilled sub trades who get pull their heads out of their asses could be pulling $100k but their poor decisions have them scraping by and driving rusted out beaters that barely get them to work. You can't fix stupid, but you should be willing to reward hard work and desire, and at least supply a decent minimum standard to people who just show up and work.

I concur. I pay a good wage in my trade. If they prove lazy or have other issues, then evaluate. Rather give the benefit of doubt.

Ya, sure you would you uneducated nail pounding sheep. Wink

Who's Jason the lobster eating surfer dude? I want to ask him his secret because I'm jealous. I was watching a vimeo video today with the owner from Punta San Carlos describing the experience of PSC and I thought, " now why the hell couldn't I have figured how to live that life?" I know a pro sailor and I still can't figure out how he swings it.

Too bad I wasn't born a trustafarian ...forget pissing off liberals with a my biased media empire, I might have landed more than one back loop by now.
