I am sure others are more knowledgeable than I, but is Alameda REALLY a straight shot on normal B&J gear from Coyote?

Yes, it is. All you need is the wind with right direction and right speed all the way across.

When we were both extremely young!

My best friend and I were just dumb enough to be fearless, bright enough to be in danger, and just young enough not to care, when Matt Case and Myself tried to do that very thing. A great 5.0 day at Coyote on 100 & 90L boards we sailed 15 miles north making it above Candlestick just south of the San Bruno hills. This was however our downfall our track had taken us to far north and not enough East, unfortunately north had good wind and the East did not. Sailing those 15 miles took us about 1hr and 1/2 to 2 hrs and we had almost 25 more miles to go! [so assuming we had made it at that pace it probably would have been a 4hr trip] Assuming the wind actually came from one direction Upwind and Across the bay is no easy feat and it is probably why they do not do the bridge to bridge UP WINDER.
A classic way to do the race of this nature is always downwind so starting at Alameda would be the easiest way to accomplish this since everything goes down wind Smile and if you are doing a down winder the flood tied is probably also the best tied as it will help flush you down to Coyote. Plus I also believe that it took us well under an hr to sail back to Coyote so time on the water is vastly diminished with that type of setup.

The downwind version is the obvious choice, but the upwind one is somehow more of a statement. As I think back to what we were trying to accomplish it was nothing more then to show up on a beach on the other side of the bay have the locals look around and wonder where we came from as we hopped in a cab back to coyote!

go slow; take it easy; and sail hard

Wouldn't Coyote (or 3rd) to San Leandro be enough, as a 'starter course'?
