An analysis of world travel statistics reveals that the international tourist traffic from developing countries consisting of Africa and Asia (excluding Japan) has been on the lower side since the early 1990s. For instance, consider the respective share in the volume of visitors to the developed and developing countries in the year 1984. It shows the real state of affairs in those times.
Out of the total of 300 million world travelers the developing countries accounted for only 11 percent during 1980. The percentage share of India was only 0.4 in 1984, but a little higher than 3.1 percent on an average for the developing countries. The trends in world tourist traffic and the share of India vis-à-vis the world as well as the developing countries during the years 1980-1984 was totally insignificant.
The late 1990s saw major changes in the world travel and tourism sector. Many of the countries in the third world started opening up their economies to international trade. Restrictive barriers were torn down. Thus there was an increase in travel to and from those countries. The freedom given to the private sector helped in the creation of more jobs and also the emergence of scores of private owned businesses. Thus there was more money in the hands of the common man.
In Kerala vacations were not given much importance in earlier times. For a vast majority of the people, a vacation in schools and colleges was the best time to travel to the houses of their near and dear ones. Such travel took place mostly within the country itself. From Kerala students whose parents were working in the gulf countries made a move to be with their parents and that too only during rare times.
Today, major changes are already evident. Gone are the days when vacations meant travel to the houses of their relatives. For the modern malayalee, vacations are a time to move out to the places of tourist interest either within the country or outside. While the international tourist season comes to a close by the month of March, the annual vacations for the educational institutions begin. Thus there is a marked increase in domestic tourism during this period. |
