For those thinking of heading to Baja - if you haven't heard - it's no longer a free ride. There are now checks on the US side of border ( by US police/DEA etc ) to stop the flow of guns into Mexico. I am not sure if it is 100% of the time, but it is quite frequent now. This is causing gridlock on 5S at the border during busy times. Plan your crossing accordingly!

I am only going on reports on the local San Diego news about the new checks and associated "grid-lock" at the border. It is not all the time. But I could see easily an extra hour getting in if you have the bad luck to be there at a busy time when they are stopping cars.
The Mexican government will be installing X-ray machines and so on at the inbound crossings (San Ysidro, Otay) over the next year, so I assume they will take over more responsibility for this as times goes on.

Do you guys pick up tourist permits when you go to San Carlos? I never have, but I'm wondering if I should...

Yes. You should. Lot's of new checkpoints too.
By the way, no waits in Nogales, AZ.

I was kinda hoping to do some target shooting while waiting for the wind to pick up. So should I leave my AK at home then?
How about a 9mm, do they care about those?

Andrew do you think it would be a good idea for me to get 2 tourist visas, one for me and one for the ice cooler the drug gang/kidnappers put my severed head in? I think it will save me a lot of time at the army check points.

In the interest of negotiation and co-operation I am not going to comment.
