A Canadian kiter was killed in the Sound at Avon, NC April 11,2008. Apparently there was a 40 mph front that came through and lifted the guy 40 feet into the air and then slammed him into the water causing him to lose consciousness. He was dragged through the water for about 5 minutes causing him to drown and the kite continued to fly. Windsurfers, passing by, didn't realize the guy was in trouble and by the time medical help got to him it was too late.

Could somebody check the wind archive at Avon, NC Sound-side for April 11 around 5:40pm and let me know what the wind was doing around this time?

Thanks
Peter Question

The wind was averaging 15 and gusting to almost 20 steadily before 6pm. Within 20 minutes the wind was averaging 35 and gusting to low 40s. There's an impressive spike on the graph. -Betsy

An update from the local physician...
Broken neck and back. He hit water not sand.
Read his twin brothers comments.
Very sad story...

The link above has the latest information concerning the unfortunate accident. The abrupt change in windspeed that day was apparantly not a factor in the kiters drowning.
