|

iWS is trying to get a wind meter up at Gilgo Beach, NY. It's the one meter location that would be most useful to a number of NYC/Long Island windsurfers who like to sail the ocean.
There is not a single iWS station on the ocean on the entire length of Long Island.
The Plumb Beach meter is down all the time and is far from accurate. The Great South Bay meters are measuring a very different set of conditions and is less than useful to me.
I can't say that I know a ton of not-yet-subscribing Windsurfers that I could recruit for iWS using the "install-a-meter" program, but I know that as an existing member, I'd prefer if my own money were spent on a meter there. I also know that I am certainly not alone. Can we kick start this thing? _________________ florian - ny22

FYI The Shinnecock meter is on the ocean...it stands on the western jetty of the Inlet, about 100 yards from The Bowl. That meter is not run by iWindsurf (ie the data is available for free) but iWindsurf carries it.
It breaks often, though.

... and it reads about 5-7 knots high most directions because it's about 40 feet up? Plus, it is about a 90 minute drive from where the mid-islanders and new yorkers sail.
Sorry, but I think the iWS investment into 100+ miles of LI shoreline is inadequate. I am thinking of pulling out, if there's no meter somewhere at Gilgo, Jones Beach or Robert Moses by the time of my next renewal. _________________ florian - ny22

By showing here by means of discussion (and confirming later in a follow-up conversation) that the investment is warranted through existing subscribers. _________________ florian - ny22

1. Shinnecock's meter readings are predictable and useful, depending on the direction and time of year. All that matters is if it tells us if we can sail and on what (for ocean sailing it needs to be holding at 20 for me (165lbs) to sail a 5.8-6.2).
2. I'm all for pulling out of iWindsurf if we can set up our own thing and service doesn't improve. The Shinnecock meter isn't iWindsurfs (there's public access as per the link I posted). Long Island is not well served at all. For that matter the Napeague meter is often grossly misleading.
3. What I think is particularly ridiculous on IWS's part is charging extra for their "wireless" site. Every information provider under the sun is setting up optimized pages with the interest of better serving (and their for better attracting and retaining) users...IWS charges. _________________ Michael

I would love to see an Ocean side meter central Long island.
You have my vote Florian!

well they've added some meters and forecasts that are of no use. How is it blowing in Central Park?
