I sailed there in 1991. It is a port tack, and surf can be very large in the summer. Unless you are a good port tack sailor and a good wave sailor, you should go out only on a flat day.

Please post up if you get to sail there. I'd like to know how the windsurfing scene is on Kauai nowadays. Aloha!

Thanks Stevenbard,

What do you consider "very large?"

Normal summer surf can be 3-5 foot, but on the big summer swells the sky is the limit. I happened to sail there on a couple of mast high days. It was challenging because of the wind direction (port tack). I generally sail a starboard tack. By the 2nd day it was getting easier. I'm sure it gets over mast high on the best swells. As I recall, you have to beat upwind to get into the surf, and it's an easy ride home. I also recall some guys throwing their gear off the rocks upwind. 21 years make the memory a little foggy, but I can tell you, I'd like to go back there!
