What's the avg winds like this time of year? & what's the best launch sites (what launches will I have access to.)
I am staying in west yarmouth & hoping to sail West Dennis beach. sister lives near Chapaquoit & Old silver
only bringing 85 liter wave board & largest sail will be 5.8
What's the chances of scoring 18-20 or better? |

Since I started keeping a log in '04, history tells me that your window is sketchy. I'd say your chances are less than 50%.
If it doesn't take up too much space, drag it along 'cause you never know.
Worst case go rent a surfboard and try out one of the outcape beaches.

I think Ron's got it right. You could get lucky and get a windy day or 2. But with only a few days to choose from, the odds are probably 50% or less. I guess you could study the archives for West Dennis if you want real data. From what I've seen the meter is pretty accurate.
I wish I could plane on my 85 liter wave board with a 5.8 in 18 to 20 mph! _________________ http://waterloggedbyscooper.blogspot.com/ |

RC | Isn't parking a hassle near the surfing beaches right now, Ron? Whatever, you are being optimistic by stating that your chances are less than 50% as August is probably the worse month for winds on the Cape. I did a study of my records which go back to '05 and published it somewhere on the net last year. I would say you have a 25% chance of sailing winds stronger than 10 knots, US4846. You'ld be better off with a Kayak or Sunfish. |

So, Brucie, what you're saying is that there really is a lackofwind.

Your odds will be better at kalmus, But if you had some bigger gear you would have a very good chance at some great sailing. Some of the larger freestlye boards plane amazing early. I am always shocked at the guys sitting on the beach whining about the wind, when they could be out there ripping with the rest of us if they had light wind gear. I
do prefer my high wind set up, but I have a blast on light wind days also , great for going real fast and smooth jibes, AND MY WINDOW OF OPPERTUNITY IS A LOT WIDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't NEED to go formula for some early planing. A powerful 6.2, a freestyle board and good technique will get going in pretty light conditions. |

If you wait until 1:00pm to hit the beach, you're gonna be out of luck. Pick a stretch when the tide is high at noon, then good surfing can be had on either end of the day.
