This was a very sad story. I talked with another very fit 65 year old in my office who said Dr. Martin was one of his best friends. They were in the triathalon club together. Another club member saw the shark lift him up 15 feet out of the water. The group was swimming about 150 yards off shore at low tide, so they were out in deeper water. The theory is that that he was mistaken for a seal. There a a lot of seals still hanging out at Children's pool in La Jolla about 8 or so miles south of Fletcher cove where the attack occurred. The seals are having their pups this time of year and the smells may have helped attract the great white shark. |
