Where are you coming from? For me, 3rd is a bit of a drive, coming from Marin. I've never sailed 3rd in the winter. If you do go there, make sure it's ebbing and make sure you won't get caught in less than a 1 foot tide, or you'll be mudsailing.

Neither have I sailed Crissy in the winter. I guess I worry enough about fluky winds there in the summer, winter would be pretty iffy.

You might consider Tomales Bay or Bodega Bay, if you're not too far. Only go out in Tomales if it's 20+ and watch out for the wind dying. I got stuck on the other side one January afternoon at 4:30 (getting dark then) when the wind completely died. If it wasn't for a fishing boat headed out on that side of the bay that was gracious enough to give me a ride across, I would have had to swim across with the sharks or walk out with the cougars. And when I rigged down and got in the car, it was already dark.

Bodega is a pretty safe place to sail in the winter. If the tide is too low, just sail the channel by the south end of the bay, hug the mudflats on the windward side and prepare yourself for glass-flat water. If it's not low, launch by the east side where you will be sure to see many local sailors rigging. Weeds aren't much of a problem in the winter there.

I leave in Brentwood, about 15 mints. away from Sherman Island. I have never sailed 3rd or Crissy in the winter. S.I. can be ok on a NW. but all the diesel in the water really spoiled the fun.

Lucky you - 15 minutes to SI. I wouldn't head to any of the bay NW sites, including Tomales or Bodega unless the forecast looks real good. Too many mid-winter NW days are just teasers. You probably won't see many of the good days until February. Then, get your 5.0, 4.0 and 3.5 and consider spending the day at Tomales. You will probably end up on the 3.5.

mountainbear,
If you don't mind lake sailing you could head to Rancho Seco. It is about a 1 hour drive from Brentwood. Take the river road just past Walnut Grove and then head east on Twin Cities Road. The lake is just off Twin Cities Road just east of Herald. On a good NW day you would recongnize quiet a few Sherman Island regulars at Seco. We usually sail Seco or Folsom on NW, but Folsom is real low right now so we have been going to Seco. Grass rigging, clear water and best of all, warm solar powered showers to rinse off. There will probably be a few of us on Monday sailing from about noon to 4 pm.

Thanks coachg, I think I may give Seco a try. Merry Chritmas to everybody!

I didn't go but a buddy of mine did. He is over 220 and couldn't get going on a 9.5. I figured the wind wasn't filling in to the east part of the valley so I went to Lake Washington instead. 12-17 mph early and a steady 18 mph as the sun was setting. Too bad the wind came in so late in the day or I could have sailed longer than 2 hours.
