didn't think the first message went through.
For the less ambitious, like me, the Chatham side of Pleasant Bay gives you the ocean wind without the big waves. Parking and not being affected by the tide is also a big plus.

Chatham lighthouse in on Main Street
Some of the posts here are surprising coming from verteran riders. Let's be clear, we are talking about forecasted wind strengths 2 days out. There is always wide divergence with what we actually get. If it's high 20's give or take, Chatham could be epic. If you bookend it, you run a real risk of slogging. I never decide when and where I will sail until I am standing on the beach and assessing the conditions. Computer models are just a general notion, not a substitute for real time data. One has to continually re-adjust. The iwindsurf forecasters begin their Extended Discussions with: "Changeable extended forecast due to the unpredictable nature of tropical systems and their remnants. Check daily forecasts for updated information."
So I begin figuring out the possible scenarios as the conditions vary. |

I was thinking about the cut, or launching on the Chatham side of Pleasant Bay and sailing to the new cut. I'm a little concerned about the outgoing tide. It looks like dead low will be around 2:30 or 3:00 so it will be going out all morning. Not sure where I'll go if it really gets up to 50 MPH plus. That's survival sailing for me on my smallest kit 3.5/85 liters... |

I agree you cant tell 2 days ahead...
We'll see how it goes. Sunday winds are supposed to switch to NW. After a NE , that could bring sick conditions... |

Youre right about forecasting 2 days out. But I still lilke to plan. After 25 years, I've had my share of being skunked.
The reports for tomorrow, less than 24 hours out look good to me.
I can't sail on Saturday no matter what. - Baby sitting duty, all day.

Dunoyer-
I've heard that the new cut is directly east of Scatteree Landing. The parking lot is pretty small but if it's a skunky day there may be no one else there. I drove there last Saturday hoping to give it a try in a South wind but the fog was heavy, winds were light, so I went elsewhere. Claflin Landing might work also. I think it would be an upwind sail in a NE wind to get out there, not sure how far.
Right now the NWS coastal forecast says gusts to 65 for Saturday. Hope that changes.
Davideg-
Where would you go in a NW wind with a left over NE swell? |

Jeff Masters of the Weather Underground writes:
The GFDL and and HWRF intensity models show sustained winds of 75 mph impacting Cape Cod and Nantucket Island Saturday afternoon. Tropical storm force winds would affect the coast along eastern Long Island, Rhode Island, the rest of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. The GFS and UKMET models take Noel farther east, and bring much lower winds in the 25-40 mph range to Cape Cod and Nantucket Island. The GFS and UKMET models are better designed to forecast extratropical systems, so more weight should be given to these models. Still, residents of the Massachusetts coast should be aware of the possibility of damaging winds on Saturday.
So we shall see.... |

Scarborough (Pt Judith) for waves ( you may get kicked out of there if High Surf Advisory is issued). If you are looking for more sheltered water, try Third Beach Newport or Ninigret Pond.
Other spots. URI Bay Campus. 9 AM Low - 3 PM high (incoming tide) |
