Ahhh... Lake Elizabeth, in the early 80's - It would be windy there when it was not happening anywhere else -It was just a drive past Castaic upper lake on the east side & keep going. The Bic 200S (plastic board) plowing through branches and flotsam - the wind direction often allowed you to sail lenghtwise from "Lizzy" to the private part of the lake through a narrow inlet.(camped once at Cottonwood Campground) Have not ventured there since glass and epoxy boards. If you have a durable, floaty board - time and gas, it's a unique area - otherwise go to Issabella (Spring)- Lake Lopez - May through July, or (it's only a 1.5 hour drive from Palmdale) and camp overnight at Leo Carrillo during July, August, or September.
Enjoy -

The lake on the 138 near the 5 is called Quail Lake. It is windy every time I go by there but it appears to be very shallow. The wind blows across the length of the lake so your reach would be fairly short because it is not a very wide lake.

Isabella is great. Lake Elizabeth? I sailed there in the 1980's, and it was cold and gusty. I sailed Silverwood in the 80's and it was hot and gusty. You might want to take the back route to Isabella, or spend some time at the ocean.

BTW, the San Luis Reservoir is less than 4 hours from you. Lopez 2 hours. both nice summer spots. If you are a wave sailor, the central coast is good in the spring.

The closest sailable lake is Quail Lake on the 138 near the 5. Before the fence was put up we used to sail there. Now you would need to poach it and be quick and quiet. Kind of like riding your mountain bike on the PCT. The next closest is Klondike Lake in the Owen's Valley but you would need a modified fin because it is so shallow-probably better for kiting. Isabella is your best bet. See you there!

Here's what one guy on a fishing blog said about Quail Lake:
"Winds blowing at 35 mph, with gusts up to 80 mph are not uncommon here. These type of winds occur about 275 days per year in this location."

Unfortunately, it looks like it's also off limits to boating.

Palmdale,,,,, Palmdale?
Sorry, I've been to Palmdale, I'd take the 2+ hour drive to Lopez Lake, in south SLO county, that'd be your best bet for actual windsurfing, or should I say "board sailing", a more accurate term for flat water sailing. It can be very rewarding from late spring thru summer as long as there is fog on the coast, and hot inland, that's the key, it's a thermal wind.
