Looks like all are welcome at Scarborough.

You guys from CT should try RI if you don't want to go all the way to the cape. Fogland is known as the Kalmus of RI, also Ft. Getty on Jamestown Isle. can get some serious swell when the tide and the wind are opposed.

See you out there.

Thanks for the info on Scarborough. Will definitely try it next NE. I used to sail RI a fair bit, started out at Ninigret, and then sailed Pt Judith near the old CG (?) station. The forecasts just didn't pan out for RI the way they do for the Cape for me. Cape forecasts seem to be more trustworthy, and truely higher wind occurs out on the Cape more often. I'll have to give Fogland some consideration. Another place I've never been that is reported to be good on a SW is Chappy on the Cape. I've heard the rolling swell can be pretty epic there on a strong blow.

Scarborough isn't very good in SW. It would be side-off and I don't think it would be clean enough, probably no waves. I've never tried it but everyone I've talked to says don't bother. Deep Hole is good in SW if you want waves. It's just west of Pt.Judith, after East Matunick State Beach. Take the exit for Matunick and go almost to the end, small dirt parking lot.

I think of R.I. as being about as good as the cape during the early spring and late fall when most of the wind is frontal and storm driven. I usually don't even think about sailing in R.I. during the warm months. I've been skunked there too many times on summer days. The wind is almost always better on the Cape then. Fogland is a little bit of an exception. It can sometimes be O.K. on a thermal day but it doesn't get real waves so I don't enjoy it as much as Scarborough or Deep Hole anyway. This is just my perspective.

I've been to Chappy plenty of times in a NW or W, (W is onshore). It gets some chop/waves but they are usually pretty variable and break right on shore, not much room. I like the waves much better at Deep Hole, Scarborough, Chapin. Maybe it's better in a SW, never tried it.

thanks, i'm looking forward to trying out the point judith/matunick area.
i visited the fishing parking lot / jetty area just west of the light house
(gravel road just before getting to the CG station).
it looks like from there you could sail at the light or reach over to
matunick easily in a SW wind. i guess the problem would be
knocking a fin on the rocks over there. it is just a long drive
to get between the two points that are only about 2 miles apart
by water.

i actually just moved here from Falmouth MA. I've sailed chappy
plenty in a SW wind. It is much better SW than W or NW. W
is perfectly on shore and can be pain. NW always looks more
fun than it actually is, since it is often very gusty. It is best with
some south in it, when you can reach just upwind of the
red nun that marks west falmouth harbor.

if you are over that way and it is really blowing and chappy is a
washing machine you can sail at wood neck beach. it is just south
of there. it is a more protected launch but has the same rolling swell
out a bit. it can be better than chappy in a W. just drive south
from chappy staying along the beach roads. once you are on
sippiwissett road woodneck beach is a turn off at the bottom
of a hill when sippiwissett bends left.

Yeah, you can sail out of refuge harbor and over to Matunick/Deep Hole and back pretty easily. It can be fun to launch inside the harbor because you can get so many different conditions depending on where you go.

Thanks for the tips on Chappy. I'll have to try it in a SW. I've been looking for wave spots on the Cape in a SW. It's hard for me to believe that there aren't more good ones down there somewhere. Maybe I've been overlooking Chappy.
