Most of what creates the Gorge winds this time of year are the pressure gradients. The reason for mornings being steady is the pressure gradients are fairly steady. When it starts getting hot in PDX, it changes the difference in the gradients. Because this difference is becoming less as the day goes on, there is not as steady of winds. The gusts tend to come from the thermal pulls and the lulls are due to lack of pressure differences.
Check out ****.com for fairly accurate wind forcasts. Ive been hitting Jones beach fairly often this year with great winds. It is always an afternoon/evening session but is as close as the Gorge if you live in the metro area. Jones is on the OR side but the best sailing is on the WA side. Steadier winds with cleaner swells/chop. Let me know if you need directions. |

You have to move east once the wind veers further north. The corridor doesnt work well in the afternoon in normal thermal conditions. The drill is to sail the corridor in the AM, Dougs in the PM. Ive met wind junkies who have never sailed anywhere else. With luck, but not much regularity, the corridor may comne back in the evening before it gets even holier towards dusk. As we said before, ya wanna sail the gorge, ya gotta drive.

Have you forgotten that Bharrisks moved to the gorge so he could sit in one spot and wait for the wind to be delivered to his doorstep, flatly refuses to drive any further than the Hatch, gets huffy or even angry at the suggestion that maybe he should actually DRIVE somewhere and blames the gorge for his lack of shred time? My suggestion that he actually drive all the way to Dougs was tongue in cheek even though true.
If you want to know why Im being so snotty, go read his thread on All Honesty - The Gorge Has Been a Disappointment from February. On second thought, dont bother. Itll spoil a nice windy day.

Boiling hot is a good choice of words, because the gusty conditions you write about are due to hot pockets of air (thermal bubbles) rising from the surface, which disrupt the predominant westerly flow (just like in a pot of boiling water).
We get them in Berkeley a lot this time of year too, just not as bad as the gorge.
Try using a larger board and smaller sail.

Im not a meterologist but I can take a guess.
As sunlight heats the ground, the air at the surface is also heated. As everyone knows, hot air is less dense than cool air and eventually a bubble of this heated air will break loose from the surface and rise. As it rises, air is drawn in from the sides, resulting in local gusts. This would imply that the gusts could come from any direction depending on your location relative to the rising bubble. However, if there is a prevailing wind the result could be bob-and-blast conditions.
Or I may be full of $#!%. |

Thats the Gorge. If ya want steady, try Clatskenie/Jones Beach/Nuclear Alley. That has the steadiest winds Ive ever seen outdoors.
