However many feet, the height of that jump is from 48" to 60", and depends if the rider peaked or is still going up. |

Nice try LeeD. Being the same age as you, I've had tons of experience over the years surfing and windsurfing, and that includes 14 trips to the islands. The fact that others here have commented on Hawaiian understatement when it comes to characterizing wave sizing, I'm not alone in my experience. The way that I see it right now, you are alone in your opinion, but that's OK. We all have a right to an opinion. |

Problem is, the guys who underestimate are novices surfers.
All the; good surfers rate wave height the same, as I've listed a few.
Same with OBSF. The guys all rate the sizing the same.
Working at Wises from years '73 thru '85, we see all the different rating systems. But EVERY single good surfer rates wave sizing the same.
Every novice or armchair surfer can rate the waves all askewed.
Remember, I'm the one who invented the "double overhead club", the "goon Tuesday clientele", and a few more sayings.
Go into Wises and ask about me.
I know I'm correct because I used to surf at that highest level. And I don't listen to guys who are scared to go out in big OBSF or Islands. How can they rate wave sizing if they're too scared to go out in 8' OBSF? |

Any novice card charger has one of those. I used to surf with the guy who invented the charge card. I even have a picture. _________________ /w\ |

When Boujma gets 20ft of air (lip to fin) above a 20ft wave, and falls back down 40ft, is that a 20ft jump or a 40ft jump?
Is an "overhead" wave a wave whose lip is above the head of a 6' surfer? and in this case is it a 6ft wave?
Or is what some (superpros) call "wave height" really what some others call wave amplitude? (see http://www.surfing-waves.com/waves/wave_terms.htm) |

OK, talking to a former 6 day a week surfer for 20 years. Worked at Wises for 10 years. Almost every big wave surfer from SanFrancisco know my name or me.
Overhead is a 6' wave. Some surfers are taller, don't matter.
At Jaws at 20', the back is around 8', so your example is flawed right off the bat. Sailor jumps JUMPS 20' high. How far he lands makes no difference, as a person jumping off a building can go 50 stories, but only one foot upwards.
That http site makes no sense, and NO surfer uses "ampliltude" ever. The waves are measured by the HEIGHT of the wave from the flats to the peak of the top. NOT 1/2 or double that. That; website is made by idiots who don't surf, for idiots who would like to be enlightened. |
