The Berkeley marina has enough money to replace one of the three public docks in the South Basin. There is a public meeting scheduled to discuss the different design issues with the various users--windsurfers, kayakers, Cal Adventures, and Cal Sailing Club. That meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 10 at the marina meeting room near the harbormaster's office. If you have concerns about how the docks should be replaced, please attend and try to let us know about what preferences you have, and why. The various design issues include the width of the dock, the length, the construction materials, height of the deck from the water, and so forth.

The dock should extend beyond the windshadow- a 1/4 mile or so should do. Just my 2 cents.

While I live in northern SoCal, I have often sailed in the SF Bay area over the years. I have to admit that it has been a number of years since I sailed Berkeley last, but the thing that I found difficult is getting out of the water onto the dock, especially if you have to swim in through the wind shadow. It would be great if some kind of ladder could be integrated into the dock to facilitate egress. My apologies if some kind of ladder has already been integrated since my last visit.

While they're making imporvements it wouldn't take much to improve the access at His Lordships. Some steps or simply rearranging the rocks would be very helpful.

Victor--there is a project in the works for Hs. Lordships which involves stairs down to the wetted zone (the green area) and rounded gravel below that--so you don't slip. It's an affordable project, but at the moment is tied to the larger Bay Trail extension, which lacks funding from the City. Trying to get it going....

er...
Might affect me more than most of you....
I work at CalAdvent right in front of that dock...all summer.
I windsurf out of there at CalSailing almost 160 days a year.
New dock would involve new pilings...aina gonna happen before we grow old.
Why make a new dock same size? Longer would be logistically super expensive. And still involve removal from Turkey day thru April.
Can't get onto from the water? I paddle a surfboard for practice (6'6"er) and swim there, no problem. It's a scary 16" above the water.
I step from my 84 liter board right onto the dock, when I don't have to swim it in.
Yes, and step off the dock onto whatever sized board.
Current outer piling MIGHT last 5 more years....closer to 3 if they leave it in on windy days and high tides.
Longer is not an option.
So we have 3 years before needed replacement.
Maybe.
Don't change for the sake of change....change only for an improvement.
There are two ladders from the big hoist to the land above, try those.

Where are the two ladders relative to the three docks extending to the south?

Since we're the floor show at Lordships on windy brunch days, I say they should make us a groovy deck/ramp/brewpup/rigging area, eh? And an outdoor buffet, wetsuit required.

How right, without a doubt, watching windsurfing is certainly a bit of spectacle for the restaurant customers. I like the idea of some reasonable consideration, especially since the locals work so hard to add to the atmosphere.

I meant brewpub, not brewpup.

Sometimes, after blowing a jibe below the windows, I wave to all the brunchers...and they all wave back.
