I wonder if the river has more chill than normal given the epic snow pack? Of course, we always have snow melt in the spring. I jumped in to start the season late April at Doug's with my 4/3 steamer and a layer of polypro underneath. Damn! - colder then I remember in past years at the same time. I think the river was around 51-52 degrees. Of course, do we get less cold tolerant as we age? How the heck did I get close to 50 already??? Seems 10 years ago, I would jump in at least a month earlier and barely notice the chill. Now I even wear a hood in the spring. Guess that's called a little humility. |

The river is a couple degrees cooler than the 10 year average temp for this date (should be 58F by now). I find the sunshine factor makes a huge difference. A 60F cloudy day seems much cooler than a 60F sunny day.
I'm a big fan of layers. Right now I'm wearing:
- polypro long underwear
- Exo long sleeve shirt
- ProMotion 5/3 wetsuit
- ProMotion Hooded Vest
- 5mm booties
With this setup, I'm toasty warm and don't mind falling in at all. I really hate being cold.
Of course, it'll sure be nice in mid-July when its shorty time!

I thought *I* wore a lot, but I'm very comfortable in a leaky old neoprene dry suit and an impact vest even on cool mornings. I lay in the swell comfortably for many minutes Thursday adjusting my harness line lengths, and take my breaks wherever I happen to fall when out of breath.
But we're all polar bears compared to two people I saw wearing dry suits, thick booties, neoprene gloves, and neoprene hoods ... in midsummer ... one at 100 degrees in the Gorge and one on Maui.

went without boots today no problem, I don't have a 4/3 so stuck with the 5/4/3 Excel, not quite warm enough for the 3/2 just yet with the amount of time I spend down in the water! |
