Governor Schwarzenegger proposed to indefinitely close parks around the state including Candlestick Point State Recreation Area. Park administrators in Sacramento selected the parks to be closed without even considering what roles the parks play in the community.
San Francisco Boardsailing Association has joined The Coalition to Save Candlestick Point State Recreation Area and has written to city and state representatives to urge that Candlestick remain open. You can help by writing to your representative, signing the online petition, or taking a bus ride up to Sacramento.
At the very least, sign the online petition and send an e-mail to your representative. The Neighborhood Parks Council has a cool page with the online petition and a page that will send you comments to your legislator automatically based on the address you enter. You can edit the message text to tell them about the importance of the windsurfing site and the fact that there are just a few good sites in the entire Bay Area.

On April 7, a bus full of park supporters will head to Sacramento for meetings with legislators. It would be great if we had a windsurfer on that bus to talk about the great recreational opportunities that Candlestick offers in addition to serving a community that sorely needs parks and open space (even if they do need more ranger presence to stop the bottle throwing dipsticks). If anyone has the time and inclination to ride the bus to Sacramento, you can reserve a seat by contacting Alexa Fabrega at SF Neighborhhod Parks Council: afabrega@sfnpc.org.
The Coalition to Save Candlestick Point State Recreation Area includes:
Friends of Candlestick Point, Golden Gate Audubon Society, Literacy for Environmental Justice, Nature in the City, Neighborhood Parks Council, San Francisco Boardsailing Association, Noteware Development, San Francisco Executive Park Advisory Committee, The Yerby Corporation, Universal Paragon Corporation
