Can anyone recommend what type of rental car is the best value for mileage and storage of windsurf gear while on Maui?

I have a family of 4 and can cartop the kit, but would like to get all the gear inside when parked overnight or traveling solo. The Dodge Caliber looks like it might work. I would rather not pay the big bucks for a van. Yea, I saw the old broken down Escort and may take the guy up, but would feel better using a legit company.

I don't DON'T!! want to use Al West windsurf cars/vans as they done me wrong in the past.

Maybe I'm too paranoid, but I wouldn't leave a hamburger wrapper in a car overnight on Maui. My stuff goes inside at night.

I used Caliber and it carried me, wife, 2 kids 9 and 11 and rigging in the car and board on top of the car. Also inside went beach chairs, and boogie boards Smile There was no spare place left.

I rented my gear - 95l board, 2 sails (up to 6.5), 2 masts 1 boom.

Everything fit inside while I was solo.

Plastic trunk floor is also very convenient for beach-soiled articles.

IMO good advice from Sergey and mkrasnoff. Don't worry too much about \m/'s hamburger wrapper theory Wink

I use a Grand Caravan minivan. They rent all over. My gear has been inside for three years now. I store it when not there with all inside. I always have had three boards six sails, four masts and three booms plus wetsuits hanging in sight day and night with no problem, but I don't go on the South side more than once or twice a year.
The gear lives in the van. I never take inside the small places I rent. Because it is a Grand I always leave the backseat in and all that gear fits inside at the same time. We often use my ride when going out to eat after sailing because four adults can sit inside with all the gear there. It is more spacious to sit in the back to change into wetsuits and not wet up the front seats.
Like many people I don't lock all the doors on the van at Kanaha or Sprecks while sailing but ALWAYS lock up in Kihei, Lahaina, or Hookipa.
Like many Hawaiians I carry no wallet or much money, and have a $20 cell phone.I just have a drivers liscense and a credit card, cheap cell to steal in my van. never a problem in 7 years so far. In the end I will get robbed any where I sail but having nothing but gear to steal is the way to go in Maui. On the other hand- lock your new surfboards big time.

Thanks for the tips folks. Looks like I'll lock a deal on the Caliber. BTW whats with all the car burglaries on Maui? We got stung for a stolen backpack two years ago after Al West rented me a van with faulty locks and refused to make it right. From what I'm hearing on this forum and in other places, locals think of parked cars like window shopping. Seems like the Mayor should do something about that rather than kill all local business that actually provides employment, wages, and disincentive to commit crime as a means of support.

Hey Folks, I'm living here on maui since 7 years. Just as everywhere else: it depends where you stay, park or windsurf. There are a very few hotspots, such as: Kihei, Paia, Lahaina and some areas of Wailuku. At these places, somebody might look for a wallet in your car. Beeing part of the local wirndusrfing community, I never heard of somebody going specifically after windsurfing gear. We all have our stuff on the back of our pickup truck, and I can't recall somebodies stuff beeing taken in the past years. The burglars are typically not the homeless, but the drug addicts ( ice is THE issue here ), sometimes homeless too.

So with a little bit of common sense and a nice place to hide your wallet you are good and can enjoy our surf !

Aloha, Ralf
