Anyone out there have any information on shipping odd-sized parcels like a board and sails bundle, safely from the Bay Area to SW Michigan / Chicago?
Thanks |

I've had good luck shipping sails. I've received them in good shape just sent in their sail bag, but I usually wrap them in one layer of corregated paper (with the corregations parallel to the battens so it rolls neatly around the sail). FedEx ground is reasonable: $30-40 for small sails.
For short boards, protect nose and tail but make the box as small as possible. The main problem I've had is a length limit. I've not found a way to send long boards by freight. Shops seem to do it, so if you have a friendly shop, you might ask them to either do it for you for a fee, or tell you how. If you find out, I'd love to know. I suspect that regular shippers have a deal with a trucking firm, but they are a hassle for occasional shippers like us. FedEx ground is good for boards too as long as it's under their length limit. I've also used DHL effectively. While they are not as well set up to handle walk-ins as FedEx is, it was worth the effort in lower cost. |

Try ForwardAir. Did the same exercise shipping a board from (near) SFO to Michigan a few years ago. Cost was around $150 and no bad surprises on either end. Good luck. O. |
