Yours is a question with a classic Hatteras answer: Expect everything.

It may be hot. It may be cold. It may be extremely windy (40 knots+). You might get skunked. Everything and anything can happen in a single week.

The classic advice about equipment is: bring everything you own, and money to buy more.

The above isn't meant to be funny...that's how it is there. Bring all your wetsuits, all your sails, and all your boards. If you own weed fins, you may need them (sometimes Hatteras gets weedy). If you only own long blade fins, be prepared to buy some that are more swept and not as long, as the Sound is quite shallow, and at low tide only shorter fins may work.

Be prepared to have lots of fun!

If you've been in the spring, you know it nukes.

Fall is lighter winds, usually sub 20 knots.

I would expect to get 3 days of 7.0, and 2 with a 5.5.
(100 liter, 175 lbs)

The water is warmer.

You should check the archive for oct 2006 Avon Sound.

That's my take, but the reason I went last fall was, the year before some storms dragged through and gave a couple days each of 30+ knots.
That stuff is really more typical of spring though.
November sucks.
