Hi everybody,
Im planning to go to Maui in early January and I am looking for some nice&friendly housing (for 2 weeks) somewhere close to Kanaha beach park...
Any recommendations? I was told that could be noisy from the airport... true?
Is there any place where you can keep your gear rigged?
Should I look somewhere more upwind (Spreckelsville?).
Thanks,
Nicolae

Hi,

A few months ago I stayed at www.spreckshouse.com. It is located minutes from Kanaha, it is a fantastic place to stay and very afforable. Check out the website.

Good Luck, Tim

We stayed at the Kahakai Estates in Sprecks. http://www.maui.cc/KahakaiEstate.html
You can leave you gear rigd. The airport noise is 24/7, but the accommodations are excellent for windsurfing.

If you like waves, stay at Sprecks (and airport noise, its almost under the take off path). The waves are often big in Jan. It was about 15-20ft+ at upper Kanaha on friday. Sprecks looked like lots of whitewater. I sailed Kanaha and it was breaking 8ft IN the channel. Yesterday and today the waves were much lower but still about 8-10 at uppers. The channel was not breaking though so it was easy to get outside.
I dont think Sprecks has a channel so sailing there may be challenging. I only saw 2 sailors over there.
If you dont sail waves, I would suggest staying at Kihei. The weather is better than north shore (less rain) and the wind is often better there in the winter too.

I do not sail waves, so I think I should go to Kihei then.
Thanks,
Nicolae

Nicolae,
Its best to
watch NWS forcasts in the winter. If its South or SW (Kona wind) or North, then Kihei would be best.
NE trades usually work at both Kanaha or Kihei.
East trades only work at Kanaha (or other north shore sites).
SE doesnt work anywhere, time to snorkle.
Its nice to have internet to access the IW wind sensors and surf reports. Rent a windsurf van (mauivans) and leave the equip in there so its easy. The shops will usually not charge for equip if its not windy if you call them that day.
Have a great time.
