I went last year for the last week in Sept. and the first week in Oct. I made out pretty well. Without remembering the exact number of days windsurfing I know I spent several days sailing my 4.2 or 4.6 as well as days with bigger sails and a few nowind/pedalling days. Thats the earliest fall trip Ive made to Hatteras and as good as any.

Bring everything. Wind ranges from 9.0 down to 3.0 (tropical storm).
As far as normal operations go, the frontal systems are strong this time of the year (as opposed to right now) so it can go to 4.0. |

yup it can be epic, or it can blow ; )
be prepared to have fun if there is now wind, but at the least you should get 3 days without question....and 7 if it lines up, i have had three trips where we sialed eveyr day and it was sweeeeeeeeeeeet |
