Does anyone still sail at Avery? Would appreciate any up to date info on this site such as launch/sailing conditions and if overnight camping is still permitted. Thanks!!

I don't remember that as being a great place to sail from. Seem to remember it being in a wind shadow. I have no info on the camping.

Had plenty of great days at Avery (actually at Averx). Back in the 90s,
we camped free there with the water (and the trains) a few feet from
our vehicles. There's a sort of secret to good sailing at Avery. Take a
really long lunch break.

I prefer Avery over Dougs because the launch is ok and no crowds of Euros. The wind is fickle but the SW can be awesome with a long ride west of the island to the Oregon side. The good wind is often late. The waves often have shape with no bad chop so you can get a good surf. The Corps of Engineers ruined the place about 4 years ago by killing all the vegitation + RR fire caused the road to the "park" to fall in. They replaced it with a gravel parking area that sucks. Sometimes if Avery looks bad The Wall will work with NW wind.
