|
|
Hi Guys:
A long batten broke on my Goya Banzai-- about 8" from the leach--. Of course getting the short leach end out is easy but the long piece is stuck. I have tried a few approaches without success. (Tried tapping from the mast end of the batten pocket with a rubber mallet.)
Any secrets for this ?
Thanks,
Pat |

You Googled it correct?
You can push press on the end like you would on a mast. Poke a small hole in the batten sleeve to get access to it. _________________ *NEW* - Manu's Windsurfing Blog, The STORE! |

Stop at your local CVS, Rite-Aid, etc and see if they have any forceps long and thin enough to reach inside the sleeve and grab the end of the broken batten. You may have to crumple up the leech of the sail to get in there.
Good Luck! |

If the broken batten end has sharp shards it won't back out of the batten sleeve, it gets caught in cloth folds. You have to remove from the mast side, that is easily done and I have done it several times. Remove a bit of stitching at the luff end of the batten sleeve on the top or bottom, just 2 or 3 stitches just wide enough to squeeze the batten out. I always place a few stitches to repair, but probably not even necessary. |

Agree, remove some stitches from the batten pocket. You can also remove stitches right next to the break location and then slide the batten out the side of the pocket.
Use a stitch ripper or very carefully cut the stitches using a razor blade. You can hand stitch the pocket back together after the batten is removed using dental floss and a hand needle. Stick the batten pocket exactly back where it was and then carefully stitch back through the existing needle holes. A pair of pliers can be used to pull the needle through the sail if it’s tough to do by hand.

when that happened to me ...
I believe that I cut the batten pocket on one side near the break at 90º
then was able to pull longer section out
think I never even stitched up the cut afterwards !! |
