US President Donald Trump’s administration says it has finalised its plan to open up vast areas of once-protected Arctic Alaska territory to oil development.

The US Bureau of Land Management on Monday released its plan for the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPR-A), a 23 million-acre (9.3 million-hectare) swath of land on the western North Slope. The record, signed by Interior Secretary David Bernhardt on December 21, allows lease sales to proceed under relaxed standards.

From this morning's Morning Consult, more efforts by Trump to pimp for the oil industry. The incompetence that characterizes his administration, and is responsible for the death of tens of thousands, fortunately works in the favor of the environment here.

Quote:
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia blocked the Trump administration's attempt to relax power plant emission restrictions, calling the Affordable Clean Energy rule a "fundamental misconstruction" of the country's environmental laws and effectively sidelining the Environmental Protection Agency's efforts to weaken climate change policies. While the appeals court did not reinstate an Obama-era rule that would have forced utilities to move away from coal and toward renewable options, the ruling clears the way for President-elect Joe Biden to enact stronger restrictions. (The New York Times)
The Supreme Court heard a fairly technical case about whether a lawsuit brought by the city of Baltimore against oil and gas companies belongs in state courts or federal courts, a distinction that could have a dramatic impact on the industry's legal exposure in over a dozen challenges about its responsibility for the effects of climate change. While the industry argued that the suits should be resolved in federal court, where it would have a better chance of prevailing because it is possible the lawsuits would be barred under federal common law, the court's conservative justices seemed ambivalent about the fossil fuel companies' arguments. (Politico)
On the Trump administration's last full day, the Bureau of Land Management issued leases for oil and gas development in nine tracts of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge after a Jan. 6 auction. (S&P Global Platts)

I have to agree with the decision that this kind of issue needs to addressed through Congress rather than the courts.

But, as most thoughtful folks know, Republicans in Congress will never let it happen. Unfortunately, we all know that such an important problem will be ignored by those on the right in favor big oil, other polluting energy sources, and those that foolishly deny that climate change is even happening.

Victory lap for the apologist? The playbook here and for tobacco litigation is very similar. Some of the same pimps worked for both groups of liars.

The Trump administration sidelined career staffers at the Environmental Protection Agency when weakening pollution rules for new passenger vehicles, according to a federal watchdog report.

The EPA’s inspector general found top political leaders at the agency failed to properly document and consider the concerns of staff experts while unwinding standards for tailpipe emissions set under President Barack Obama.

The report, released Tuesday, may provide fresh fodder for the Biden administration to tighten mileage and greenhouse gas standards for new automobiles as part of a broader effort to phase out internal-combustion engines and drastically cut the nation’s climate-warming emissions.

President Biden’s team is in the midst of negotiations with carmakers, autoworkers and environmentalists for new pollution standards for new vehicles, aiming to protect factory jobs and cut emissions. The industry wants generous government incentives for producing cleaner cars, while labor leaders want to stave off job losses during the transition to electric vehicles.

This is the cancel culture I like to see. The Senate cancels Trump's big pay off to big oil and the Koch's.

Quote:
The Senate voted 52-42 to effectively reinstate an Obama-era methane rule, using the Congressional Review Act to rescind the Trump administration's relaxation of the 2016 regulation of the potent greenhouse gas. The regulatory reversal had the support from many companies in the oil and gas industry and prompted three Republicans - Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) - to join their colleagues across the aisle to vote for the measure. (Politico)

52% of American's are now in favor of a carbon tax.
