Any luck on an answer? I’m in San Antonio, headed to Corpus this Sun—first time so I’ll be of little help. But I’ll be headed to Bird Island Basin Rd. and will search for launches there. Look at Worldwinds Windsurfing, Inc.

I have been. Prior, the Bay Area downtown I don’t know. WW is in the Park, and it’s very suitable, mostly flattish

Launch site North Beach or Orleander?
NB was industrial.
Orleander residential.
Downtown? Between the 2 but inland.

I am also interested in any local knowledge on Corpus launch sites, specifically foil friendly. I believe Bird Island is too shallow for a full length (85cm) mast. Also any update on World Winds? Rumor is they didn't survive the pandemic.

There is a beach downtown, south of the long breakwater, where we used to have the Windsurfing Nationals. For a formula fin, you need to get a bit offshore. Further for a foil, and I think there are shoals. You can get the bathymetry at this site:

https://catalog.data.gov/dataset/corpus-christi-bay-g310-bathymetric-digital-elevation-model-noaa-nos-estuarine-bathymetry

Bird Island is definitely too shallow for lit foiling. It is wading depth most everywhere, plus oyster mounds. Nice on a slalom board.

I foiled with a 90cm mast last March and had no problems. Also sailed with a 70cm race fin. You do need to wade out about 100’ and then it is shoulder depth or deeper. Bird is a National Park and my senior adventure pass gets me free access. I stay for one to two months every spring. As far as I know, Worldwinds is closed while there is a change of ownership. The new owner, Olivier, is a great guy and excellent sailor. The launch area is open. Already looking forward to next Spring.

A tip for Corpus newbies: just like the Gorge, the wind can be quite different at various launches. Don't just pound sand at your chosen spot without checking other sites. I'm guessing many Corpus sites now have iW sensors; we had to drive to investigate them decades ago. It often paid off.
