The smell of smoke must be strong with that kind of density.

Fires have been happening since before 1900.
If you happen to be stuck where the smoke accumulates, and there is no wind, you get orange mid days until wind blows it away. |
HI dllee, You are right. There have always been fires in Oregon. But this combination of fires and wind is quantitively different than what the state has ever seen before. So your same old, same old post is a bit understated.
1. 10% of the population has had to evacuate.
2. 500 square miles of Oregon are currently on fire.
3. Smoke from the fires covers 50% of the state.
4. The plume of smoke from the fires goes almost 1000 miles out into the Pacific. (see below)
5. Five towns in Oregon have been substantially destroyed: Detroit, Blue River, Vida, Phoenix and Talent.
5. The 35 current wildfires burning in many parts of Oregon could lead to the greatest loss of property and human lives in state history.
6. Fires are closing on some Portland suburbs at the moment.
