I'm a beginner practicing in the Marina but want to be cruising the coast. If anyone wants to be hired to do some instruction for beach starts, footstraps and wearing a harness, reach out to me. I also surf and sail, so I know the ocean well. Thanks! |

I learned how to windsurf by going to the beach and talking with the guys rigging up. Some were arrogant and most were really cool. If you come to Leo on a windy day I could help. I drive a grey raptor. |

If you're familiar with Leo C., you'll know that booties are recommended. And you'll want to open up your footstraps to accommodate the extra thickness of the neopreme. The rocks are very toothy buggers that somehow grow taller and toothier by the year.
You could also head south to Cabrillo. I believe it's mostly, if not all, sandy bottom, so it may be friendlier to learning. But people do learn at Secos (aka Leo Carillo), so it's not impossible. As I said, bring booties and be aware. There are also a couple of submerged reefs (treacherous at certain tides) at the upper part of what used to be referred to as the windsurfing area. Even the most experienced lose a fin every now and then to it. Ask anyone on the beach, including Maharishi Mahesh Malibu, and they'll fill you in on the issues. Good luck. |

OK there's some really bad advice being thrown out right now Leo Carrillo is a wave venue there are WAVES, rocks, current, seaweed, surfers! do not go there as a total beginner.
The inside area at cabrillo is gusty but there are no waves or rocks plenty of people have learned there and sail there every day you will get nothing but good advice and positive reinforcement there I guarantee |

Try lake Perris any summer afternoon. Use to be a good crew there |

While I've never sailing there, a possible alternative to Leo Carrillo could be Zuma Beach. Endless sand bottom with no rocks or seaweed makes things a lot easier, but there still can be waves to deal with at times. It's a bit more onshore, but it still gets much of the wind that Leo sees. Kiters have been taking advantage of the west end of Zuma around Trancas for some years now. |

I recommend a trip to Lake Lopez outside Arroyo Grande for learning to waterstart, jibe or fast tack. Warm flat water, moderate temps this time of year and you can’t get in too much trouble because of the size. Get there while it still has water. My wife and I did most of our learning and teaching there in the late 80s. Don’t know about instructors so bring a sailing friend.
Hot inland and fog on the coast usually means some wind at Lopez. |
