What suggestions do you have for a 100lb dude who would like to get into faster sailing gear? Currently on Gecko146

That is a very big board for your size. Assuming you already have the tuning & technique down the lowest cost would be to find a faster fin for your board. If you want to spend more there are plenty of used slalom or freerace boards you can get but make sure you pair them with a good fin. For sails freeride, freerace or race would work as long as you pair them with the proper mast.

Not knowing the wind or water state you will be sailing in makes it impossible to offer sizes, but at your weight finding small race sails will be a chore.

Coachg said most of it, my question would be how fast are you on the Gecko and how long have you been windsurfing?

Eat more food, use a weight vest, head more downwind, avoid chop, sail overpowered.

What's your idea of fast?
Top speed, first to plane, fast turn, angle of attack or getting past lulls.
Fin, sail size, proper rigging, type of board and sail and skill all need to be considered.
Do you want to get a full on race board and a big cam sail? If so will you have the skill to make it go fast.. A board and sail combo might be "fast" in smooth water but beat you up in heavy chop causing you to back off.
Fast to the extreme is expensive. Carbon everything. Bigger sails with cams.
large costly booms, on and on. So the question is what is your skill level and conditions where you sail most? We need to know so we can guess at what might work. Lots of really skilled people here willing to help...Drink more beer

fast in a straight line is different than around a course. physiology, gear, tuning, and technique all make differences as well.

i just did a google search with this phrase

how to maximize my speed windsurfing

start there

Faster means more horsepower (more wind and or bigger sails), plus the appropriate size board for the conditions and the skill of the sailor.

Determining exactly what is needed for Jponhudson requires more information on skills.

Assuming that the exact equipment is prescribed, skill will be the overall determining factor for speed at that point. Novices just beginning to plane are typically scared and uncomfortable when they begin moving at 20 mph, while experts are comfortable at 40 mph. Not unlike snow skiing. Want to go fast?, just find a steep hill. The speed will be determined by skill.

Find others who want to go fast - slalom or speed sailors. Trying to learn slalom or speed on your own is hard (but not impossible).

From the Gecko 146, a Blast 130 (or similar) would be a big step towards going faster. Non-experts in typical East Coast conditions will often be faster on boards like the Blast than on full slalom gear. This assumes you're around 200 lb / 100 kg.

I'm 165 lbs. and have a 2020 Fanatic Blast 115. Its a great board. Don't know if its super fast against a high end slalom board but it's easy to make it go fast and the ride stays composed at speed. Easy to turn.
