once water is inside, and the board experiences warm to cold cycles, delaminations occur. eva also talks about leaving the vent closed after one discovers a leak. water will migrate toward the vent if one loosens it.
best to thermal cycle the board for more than a week with the board situated with the potential leak being the lowest point while at rest. if board is dripping, open up the cracks and continue dry docking until core is as dry as one can hope. repair as above. some pro repair guys know all this and more. _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

The problem is not so much several ounces but more that the board will continue to leak if the problem is not fixed. Every time you go sailing the board goes from a warm state on the beach to a colder condition when you put it in the water. The air trapped inside the board will contract and create a small pressure differential which will suck water into board through even the smallest opening. This may only be a small amount of water each time but the repeated cycles can eventually accumulate a significant amount. Most boards have a light EPS open cell foam core which water can freely travel throughout the board.
Eva's website boardlady.com has a very thorough explanation of this topic. I would recommend that every windsurfer read this to understand the potential consequences of using ding sticks, tape and other temporary solutions as long term repairs. |
