foiling on the ocean side at Cabrillo is pretty straightforward. there are areas of kelp, but if you launch from the lifeguard station and reach straight out, you can avoid most of the inside kelp line which is upwind. Even upwind, if you have maneuverability, you can slalom through the kelp line without too much fuss.

I used to sail at Cabrillo only when I was really desperate, jonesing for a go-out after a long period of no sailing, if that was the only game in town. I always considered the ride to Cabrillo from my house (for a long time I lived in Topanga Canyon, now I live in Santa Monica) as a disincentive to going there. Even then I never sailed inside the breakwater.

Most of the winter sailing for those of us on the Westside, or the Valley, has always been at County Line. I can't think of a spot less ideal for a foil! Also Leo or Topanga seem way less than ideal.

Ever though about Zuma? While it can have surf to outcome, the bottom is sandy and free of rocks. I've never sailed there myself, but I would think that there is little to no kelp or eelgrass because of the extensive sand bottom.

I have never sailed Zuma either. Occasionally I would wonder about it while driving by on my way to Leo or County, but nobody ever windsurfs there, although it is kited regularly. Must be a reason.

I have sailed at Sunset however, and that might be an option for foiling. Not too many rocks at low tide. Wind tends to be side-on but doable. That is my closest break and where I often SUS. I have seen multiple stand up foilers there but never a windfoiler.

Zuma is known for shorepound, ok for kites but challenging for board.
Used to windsurf at Gladestones, maybe 8 days, staying up the hill.
It's onshore, but like OBSF, you can still head down to ride waves.

I took my first windsurfing lesson in Marina del Rey, at Mother's beach; it was taught by the Windsurfer store on Lincoln Blvd. which was owned by the folks who invented the original Windsurfer! That was back in the early 1980's. UCLA has a rowing center on the main channel but it is not open to the public.

Is that Gladstones, the restaurant at Sunset and PCH?

I wonder if anyone has done this from Marina del Rey?

It might work in some other locations but I can't imagine it working at MdR.
