Mac, on a 7.0, to top of pier plus foiling. Downhauled enough.

6.3 with recommended down haul.

Perfect 20-21 avg. (reading 18-19) yesterday sailing just up wind of HLS. Anything smaller would have been anything but ripping.

To me, much more fun on 5.3 than a 7.0 slalom sail, and just as fast in the puffs.
Jibes waay better, and no slogging below the 3rd dock.
For the record, I suspect Sofien was on 4.2.

A loose and baggy sail feels heavy, is unstable and won't sail to wind well. A twisted off leech reduces drag, puts the power down low where you control and balance you sail with the boom and harness lines and makes the sail feel lite and slippery. That said you can bag it out if the winds backs off and get a few more rides before it ends.. I vote for twist in the top of the sail.

Back to the original question. (See first comment in this thread)
Because, depending on the brand and model the sail is designed or rigged with an improper center of effort.

Guys, you only tune with tight leech when you rig small, as in underpowered!
See the above 4 posts.
Same conditions, Sofien rigs the smallest, tight leech, and he is the best sailor.
Ming and I rig 5-5.3's, solid planing.
You who tune with max downhaul need 6 meters just to plane all the time!
And of course, putdown wind Formila would choose 10 meter sails while course foiler get by with 7
Your choice, 15-22 mph, 4.5 or 6.0?

Yes if one is a trickster then the small low down haul sails are perfect but if one wants to scream then go big or go home!

Just how fast to YOU really "scream"?
The only fast guy this year is Chenda that I know of. I don't sail Pt. Isabelle.
Chenda on a 7 meter is about 1/2 mph faster than me [when fully planing] on a 5.3 and freeride board, which means his 107 Isonic get me by about 50-70 feet on the reach from Lordship to boat channel Emeryville.
We weigh the same. I can do multiple jumps, duckjibes, jumpjibes, and shovits.
I'd choose 5.3 almost every time.
In my garage sits a 84 JP Slalom, a 95 Exocet Slalom, a 109 Supersport, a 111 Futura, and a 111 Isonic.

No doubt that Sofie and Chenda are great sailors. Sofie sails freestyle, uses the smallest sail he can get away with, and is often luffing as he does tricks. Chenda is a very fast slalom sailor, former racer, and is usually on a 7.8 meter sail in anything under 24 mph. Down hauled to twist. Usually a sail size bigger than me when I’m foiling—and weighs at least 20 pounds less.

Different disciplines require different equipment.

Chenda is normally 155 lbs.
Sofien closer to 140. He's skinnier than me, and totally floats a 85 liter board.
