The wind vane is broken. If you look at the map version of iwindsurf you can see that all the other wind vanes in the area are showing strong west wind but the one we pay for is showing SE. Our friends at iwindsurf apparently have decided to punt on this one and not fix it.

4.7 all day to day and I had probably the largest sail
out there . One of the best High Wind day's yet this year
very filled in most of the time from 12 to 6pm.
When the I windsurf meter was saying 16 and south toward
the evening it was more like 25 Sw average on the the water.
Sail sizes ranged from 3.3 to 4.7 . About 7 Santa Cruz people
on the North side . David and a few others on the South side.
Yesterday I was on a 5.6 and had to work for it a lot of the time.

Iwindsurf should at least put up a disclaimer about there sensor
if they don't want to fix it.
We have been pointing this out for the last two years.

You cannot believe the direction of this sensor it is 90 to 180 degrees
out . You use to be able to look at the 152 sensor before somebody took
it out . Best bet is look at the Live Flow map and the Pacheco pass senor
for direction now.

Normal sail-able directions NW to SW
North is not good South is not good.
Why cause you can end up stuck on the other shore
if you are not highly skilled and the wind is kind of fluky
from those directions.
Sometimes people sail East winds in the boating area
of Oneil Forebay but its pretty fluky and unreliable.

I always figure that the gust on the IW sensor is about the wind speed on the water. And the direction is pretty useless. But, if it's summertime, cool & foggy on the coast and San Luis is windy; then the direction is somewhere west to southwest. You can confirm that with the surrounding sensors, like Pacheco Pass and San Luis Rec. Area

Looks like they've disabled the direction readings as of this morning. Who knows, maybe they'll fix it.

Hey guys,

We install and repair dozens of our many hundreds of sensors every month from Canada to Cancun, Mexico and across the USA.

There is a reason that the San Luis sensor is not being repaired. This sensor was installed decades ago when California was a very, very different place. We can not access the sensor now and to even try might endanger this sensor and several others in California. For obvious reasons, I can not say more.

I have been in IM contact several San Luis regulars who are aware of the situation but asked them not to talk about it. Please use similar discretion in talking to people in the San Luis area to protect this and other sensors.

It is amazing the sensor has lasted this long.

In the meantime... we really need help finding a new location for a sensor on private property!. We do not need electricity or a phone line but must have a good wireless signal and have a secure location.

Until we get a new location use this link for San Luis wind information.

https://wx.iwindsurf.com/map#36.966,-120.851,11,1

Our old sensor is fairly good for velocity (see hints above). Then use the nearby sensors to get a feeling for the direction and to confirm the winds in Pacheco Pass.

Although we do not forecast for San Luis anytime the forecast mentions a marine surge or a large eddy west of the Bay Area and you see fog extending from Monterey Bay towards Pacheco Pass... start checking the sensors above.

I forecast winds in the Pacheco Pass to Los Banos area for GoogleX during the early secret days of Project Loon https://loon.com so I know the winds in that area very well. Perhaps with the increased frequency of eddies & SW flow we will think about doing a forecast for San Luis one day.

cTuna,

The marine layer is mixed out due to the upper trough aloft. So today you will not have fog as a clue for San Luis. There is still a solid pressure gradient in that area so watch the sensors.

There is a Calfire station very near where the iwindsurf sensor is now. It's not private property but they might be a more cooperative agency to work with (assuming that is the issue). There is a RAWS weather station there (Los Banos RAWS) marked with a pin on the attached image.

Arrived at 12:30 wind low but it picked up to a semi usable
range within 30 to 40 minutes.
Water Level low and now the slick weed patches are showing.
They are in the usual places no green masses yet just slick spots.
The channel is still clear.(by the power lines.
Rigged a 6.0 and had to work for it at first.
About 3pm the 6.0 was getting back handy..
rigged a 5.3 and of course it dropped.
Bil and Kathy showed up late looks like they were mostly
powered on 5.3 s in the channel.
