Yup, that's where the wind was 2 weeks ago when Berkeley was South at around 11, and PtIsa SE around 14.
We got 3 days of 5.0 sailing, me on a 80 liter board, from end of the road Marina Bay and heading W.

it's been like that the last four days. The Shimada park launch is good for windsurfers at low tide. Here's a picture of the park and the launch at the end. Parking can be tight on the weekends, especially if there is a quinceanera going on. The wind on the beach, and in the lee of the island in general, can sometimes be pretty weak/shifty even on a super windy day. It's possible to launch there without booties, as there is a more or less clear path about 20' wide between the end of those concrete cylinders and the rip rap. Also, it's kind of cleared out in front of the steps (200' west of the beach launch).

Funny story....
One of my last kiting days, I had just come in, great day, and Leo Lomelli, a kiter since '97, offered to catch my kite.
He caught it, I gave thumbs up, and started walking his way to start the windup process of the lines.
Leo tripped, threw the kite straight up, and in a gust, powered up and sent me flying across those rocks, then over the hiking path, to land dead square against the now blue concrete bathroom.
ONE long flight. I was draped atop the bathroom, my legs on the sides, my torso laying horizontal as the kite finally zenith'd and powered down.
Took a couple weeks off after that one. Took a nice long flight too.

Andy,

I think you meant Shimada is NOT good for WS launching at low tide? It is very mucky and unless that cement bag "path" is still functional, not pleasant. Then depending on wind direction it's hard to get off shore.

The beach/park described in photo above is Vincent Park, which may indeed be better than Shimada at low tide.

Fortunately, Pt. Isabel launch is not really affected by tide level.

Cheers, David

I have not been there for several years. It was a bit fluky but does get some wind at times. That island is a bird sanctuary, so there are lots of birds droppings, which turned me off from sailing there. I prefer upwind, on the S/SW side of the strip. Has some nice swells and wind usually blasts when blunt is on

Finally ventured back to the Speed Run today around 3PM on 106L and 5.5 sail. Eastern end superb, but started to run out of decent wind up near the western pylon.

Three of us WSers and 3 kiters.

Reminded me of how much fun slashing around the pylons can be, not having to worry about chop, etc.

It's also possible to portage across the "gap" if you want to experience both sides of the "jetty" during same session. Did that once but not as a rule.

Crossing the gap and sailing up to OC is pretty fun too

Pretty fun until your mast breaks and you're forced to paddle home with a 85 liter board.

Happened to me long ago - stranded on the Potrero jetty until my buddy Oren towed me back to Vincent. Probably could have swum though.

Mast breaks are bad news anywhere they occur. Best to stay in swim or self-rescue range IMHO.
