People outside of San Diego might not be aware but locals protesting gas prices increases are occasionaly swarming the border crossing into Mexico at San Ysidro causing it to be closed - you will be diverted to Otay, along with long delays and the thrill of finding your way from there.

That combined with possible gas shortages caused by protests and worsening US-Mexico relations could make this an interesting Baja season...

I drove through the border recently on way to La Ventana from the Gorge. Waited 3 days in the Bay Area based upon reports like you cite. Then decided to take a chance.

Got through the main TJ border crossing in the shortest time in decades. Made record time to La Ventana. No gas issues at all. Gas station attendants just looked at me blankly when I asked about the gas issue.

The gas strike apparently was very brief and isolated to the border to SQ zone. Gringos who did drive through the strike reported that passenger cars were waved through by protesters with lots of smiles on all sides.

Wish things were as great on the wind and swell front here. Prolonged calms interspersed with crazy shifty violent winds and some 5.0 days. Campsites the whole length of Baja were packed with RV's and white haired snowbirds. I have never seen the La Ventana area so packed with kiters and windsurfers.

I would be whining except the temperature here is in the 70's while the Gorge is having the worse winter in decades. Sure looks like the jets stream is making the predicted huge oscillations.

This Sunday (yesterday) the San Ysidro border into Mexico was closed - so it's pretty random.
A good resource is the "TalkBaja" Facebook page for finding the current status.
