If 25 to 30 is the low and high range, I'm looking at my 4.2 and my 82 liter wave board. Depends on the state of the water. If its gusting to that, maybe a tight 5.3 or a nice 4.7. A lot depends on weight, board size, water conditions and skill level. I sail with some guys that are much heavier than me. We find that as the wind quality and speed picks up, are sails size gets closer to each other... |

First off, make sure that your masts and sails are designed to work together. Also, like many others have mentioned, sticking with a single brand is best. Still though, it's important to focus the right models for different wind and water conditions. In my experience, the following sail sizes are optimum:
4.2, 5.0, 5.7, 7.0 and 8.3
With respect to boards, things are more personal, but I've found the following sizes to be great for a more minimalist quiver:
80, 95 and 110-120. |

I would start with the biggest sails for the corresponding boards first. A 7.5 Cheetah for the light wind board and a 5.8 Tiger for the FSW and work my way down from here. |

It's almost impossible to give a useful answer online. If we did, it would probably be, "knock 5 mph off that range, if you're talking about average wind speed". The problem is that the following questions and points affect the answer strongly:
1. One venue's "25 kts" = another's 20 kts and yet another's 30 kts. The causes of those disparities include sensor location, wind patterns, shoreline influence on the sensors and the wind quality, human estimations, and more.
2. Personal preferences affect sail size by 30-50%. I've seen several guys play together for hours, each rigged perfectly according to his preferences, on sails ranging from 4.2 to 6.2, and rider size was not a factor despite a 90-pound range. And there weren't even any racerheads among the bunch; that would have added some 7.5s.
3. On what size board? I enjoy 5.2s on anything from 65 to 95 liters (plus a 135-liter strapless windSUP during knee rehab) at any weight from 170 to 205 pounds depending on wind quality, terrain, volume , and more, all of which affect ride quality.
4. What kind of sailing are you talking about ... B&F, B&J, DTL, drag racing, freestyle/tricks, ...? All that really affects sail and board choices.
5. And how about wind quality? I usually rig for the average wind, but safety can affect that if the gusts are insane. |

25-30 Knots sound more like 4.7 to me at 180lbs,
and I read that as 25 with gusts to 30.

I sail my 7.5 Lion and 6.5 Cheetah 90% of the time on Lake Erie.
I have a 5.5 Cheetah which I used twice last summer. That purchase could have just as well been a Tiger.
I have an old 8.5 NP V8, which sees the water once in awhile on a first generation Formula board with only 85 cm width.
I weigh 210.
You might be able to get away with 7.5 Lion, 6.5 Cheetah, and a couple of Tigers. Or 8.0 Cheetah, 6.5 Cheetah, a couple of Tigers. |

I wouldn't go cambers for anything below 8.0. I had once a 7.5 and a 6.5 Infinitys and I got rid of them after just a season because they felt dead to me and especially lacking the acceleration and maneuverability I expected from this sizes. Also you gain more top end stability but loose on the early planing with cambered sails which characteristic again suits bigger sizes. |
