Hi TI sailors. The redevelopment plan for TI currently plans to greatly discourage vehicular access. So good luck getting your gear there. But you could voice your opinion on the plan. Read below:

Thanks for the post. I have it on my calendar. There are huge issues relative to traffic getting on and off the island when the development begins. As those who sail there already know, it is good to have a car that accelerates fast when merging into fast moving bridge traffic. My understanding is that the intent is not to restrict access but rather to charge a toll. Though I don't particularly like the idea of paying $5 to get out there; however, in the scheme of things, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Showed up at this meeting. Nothing really new to report. The landscape architect for the project at CMG is a big watersports enthusiast and has us high on his radar. The master plan for TI is very conceptual with regards to the open space. There will ultimately be two launch locations (one at the existing location and the other at the NW corner of the island) but that part of the work is the last phase of the development and would say we are looking at 8-10 years out before this comes to fruition. A more developed design is years away as well. We will likely need to push for interim improvements once the Navy finishes their remediation in the area next year.

Right dvCali! We need to make sure the park meets ADA standards. Cause we'll all be using walkers by the time it gets built! javascript:emoticon('')
But my concern is what happens between now and then? They will build out the island in phases, starting at the southern end. The current launch area gets transferred last, a function of both the radiologic cleanup and that fact that it makes no money for the developer. And so the park and launch areas come at the end of some 20 year process. In the meantime we need to ensure that we have access through the 'construction zone'. With a few exceptions, every structure on the island will eventually be removed and replaced with something else; that's a lot of work!
But I think it is a great redevelopment plan given the constraints they have to work with. Here are some aspects:
parking and restrooms at two launch areas (up wind and the current cove)
potential for hotels (think Vela!)
[keeping] lots of "event space" - already serves that purpose
ferry service to and from SF to relieve bridge traffic
demand pricing for auto access (to even out commute pressure)
enhancement of the sailing center and access to the Clipper Cove Beach
Better pedestrian and bicycle trails throughout the island
bike connection to the new span (happening now)
-Tom
