Can't see how that tiny kite can provide for much power.
Going dead downwind, the kite can provide for steering stability downwind, but not for any added power. |

Reading on SkySails Web site, it looks like they have used kites of 160 m^2 and 320 m^2. They list their kite supplier as North Sails New Zealand. |

I have seen them at TI assisted by a couple of power boats (seems to be a trend with Kites!). It is kind of cool to run into it on the water but it is actually quite noisy (or it was when I was out). It was approaching me from the back and I noticed because of the strange loud "rhythmic whistle" that it was producing ...
It looks way less impressive (even conceptually) then the amazing Hydroptere https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36PRnNBuN9I but they are probably where hydroptere was 30 years ago. Still I wonder how they will ever be able to make the launching of the Kite practical ... or reducing size ... or relaunch if the kite comes down in high seas ... or it get tangled ... |
