For those that sail Treasure Island, I wanted to alert you to revised access to the ramp. As a result of the continued remediation of TI, fencing was installed Monday that blocked our path to the boat ramp and drain pipes. Through the quick and professional efforts of Ross Libenson aka Rad Ross, contacting Bob Becker at TIDA and meeting in person with him on Tuesday, new access has been established. When you get out there you will notice lots of new fencing. For now we can still park in the apartments where we have been parking but will most likely need to carry our gear behind the buildings and then rig up. Please do not disturb the occupants of any of the residential units. In the discussions Ross had with Bob it became clear that our previous efforts to be considerate and respectful of the residents has helped our cause. As I understand it, there will not be easy access to the drain pipe launch currently, but a long carry is an option. I am not cutting and pasting all of the email communication between Ross, Bob and others but suffice it to say this is a pleasant outcome for anyone that regularly sails TI. Thanks also go to Lisa St. Claire who noticed the original flyer and alerted some of the TI regulars including Ross. Things will continue to evolve but Bob has said that he would keep Ross in the loop. So if you have any issues, please do not initiate contact on your own but rather discuss with Ross or post here and it will be addressed. Sail on!!

A another big thanks to Ross for jumping on this! These last few years I was trying to monitor the Navy's remediation plans and knew they were headed toward the ramp, but the exact when and where was not clear (recent bad press on the cleanup may have changed their schedule). Bottom line, the Navy should be able to accommodate our need for modest access but we need to do our part to work with them and the residents.

So where exactly is the new access? From the post, I got that we park in the same are in front of the abandoned apartments and now are supposed to rig behind them. But where do we go once rigged in order to access the water? Is there a safe place to land?

The access into the water is the same boat ramp. There is a new opening in the fence to get to the pathway that leads to the boat ramp. I haven't been out there yet, but from the pictures in the emails (not posted here) it is approximately 25 yards to the right of the opening we have been using. This may get moved further during the summer as their plans call for relocating tenants and continuing their process. Parking may become more of an issue this summer as well. We'll just have to see how it goes but we are as WB aka koogzah stated, "represented by the preeminent expert in windsurf-access negotiations."

Goodwill towards windsurfers from TIDA has been earned by being good guests when parking and rigging in the neighborhood on North Point Drive. Please continue neither to park nor rig in front of occupied units, and refrain from loud music, open alcohol, etc. Don't hesitate to kindly remind other windsurfers of the same, if necessary.

The path or gap between where we can park and access the perimeter berm path to the ramp is currently narrow and very near the corner of an occupied unit in building #1237. Despite a nasty back-draft in this area, try not to let your rig hit the building if you attempt to rig near your vehicle versus in the field behind the building. The TIDA contact is aware of this and our need for a wider path to carry gear. He is working with the Navy's contractor on this.

Regardless, in August, building #1237 is planned to be vacated and fenced which will include the current narrow path being blocked. The TIDA contact is making arrangements now to ensure our continued access to the ramp by passage on the south side of building #1237 when this additional fencing occurs.

Thanks, Ross

Access is a little more awkward than before but still very doable. The upwind "pipe jumpers" are a lot more impacted than us downwind "ramp walkers."

One positive is that the fence around the old parking lot was removed and replaced with one that has a smaller footprint. There is a 20-30 ft wide zone on the western edge of the parking lot that will be our new path to the ramp and possibly a rig/de-rig spot. The northern edge of the new fence is now set back about 20 feet from the top of the rock wall, so the folks who used to like walking up and down those rocks from the parking lot could probably do so again. The sand bags are still there.

I sailed TI yesterday and the modified access is no big deal. You have to rig in the grass behind the apartment by the launch instead of next to your car. Nice to see some of Team Dawg out there still making it all look so easy on the water.
