I signed her up for Boardsports' Kids Camp this Thursday and Friday, June 14-15 in Alameda, but they need a minimum of four to make it viable. She has been looking forward to it for weeks and I would hate to have it cancelled.
Do you have a 7-12 year old son/daughter, grandchild, niece/nephew, or neighbor to whom you would like to give the gift of windsurfing? It's $150 for two days, 10am-1pm. Check out http://boardsportsschool.com/windsurfing/lessons/kids-camps/ for details.
Thanks! |

Hi,
I realize I am two years late with my reply, but I couldn't speed up my kids' growing and aging process
Are there camps for kids to learn how to windsurf this year?
Where would I go for them?
How did your daughter fare?
Do you have plans for her this year?
Thanks,

Ulf, I think the Rio Vista Windsurfing Association offers some kids camps during the summer and also, they have a full array of kid-sized gear to use that they will set up in a big tent by the main parking area on Sherman Island. (This will be in several months-- not now of course!) |

Not exactly a local answer, but up in the Gorge Big Winds has kids camps all summer (1 week each). Plus that way you get to visit the Gorge yourself |

In addition to the above if the Delta is easier for you to get to.

She runs kids camps with Jason Voss during the summer.

He teaches kids & can hook you up with kids gear.
In the south bay you may try Shoreline Aquatic Center.

They used to teach windsurfing to kids. I got certified there but that was about 12 years ago so I'm not sure it they are still teaching windsurfing.

I worked as part of the Cal Adventures Youth Camps for 3 years. It's not cheap, but the kids have instruction and care for half the day.
I'm not sure Cal Sailing have youth oriented classes, but they teach windsurfing every Sat 10-1 during the wind season, and membership is 100 bucks for 3 months. |

In the summer, Shoreline (in Mountain View) offers sailing/windsurfing camp. I sent my son there for one summer week. Although I taught my son first, he really enjoyed the sailing camp for the week (he learned how to do a helicopter tack there). They split the time between sailing small boats and windsurfing. The only negative thing is the disgusting lake water (and goose poop). |

Can't give enough praise for the Cal Adventures Kids Camp. (Little biased since I ran the program for 5 years).
However, it has produced two of the top pro sailors in the US. Rob Warwick and myself, and quite possibly the best female freestyler in the US Astrid Leitner (who also ran the program for several years).
Getting kids into windsurfing is all about making it fun and there is nothing more fun than hanging with a big group of other kids and windsurfing and pushing each other off boards and goofing around.
Nothing makes windsurfing less fun than, being forced to do dads lame sport with him instead of hanging with a big group of kids.
The other thing that makes windsurfing fun with a bunch of kids is being slighty better than the rest of them (so getting a head start with Boardsports School is a great idea).
Cal Adventures kids camp it super fun, and cheap...but its nice if you live somewhat close. Lots of kids who take it the first week decide thats what they want to do summer and take the camp repeatedly which was was Rob, Astrid an I did. Then you can graduate to joining the cal sailing club which is also an insanely fun and encouraging group. |
