Now THAT makes sense. It's easy to stay dry and safe at any rational temps when liquid water is not a threat. I've enjoyed extended skiing, snow boarding, and dirt biking without a coat with both air and surface temps at well below zero F, but I'll be damned if I'll get in any icewater again even if the air's in the 60s and I'm overheated in a 6mm dry suit.

That does look pretty awesome! Your under-ice footage from last year was really cool, too. But, oh man solid h2o is so much harder in a crash.

It has not yet stopped me from sailing, but my cold weather sessions have gotten shorter over the years. We don't get all that many days here below the 100 degree rule--maybe several per month during winter. But once the air temp hits the 40s my hands are in trouble. I did start bringing a small cooler filled with hot water so I can dip my hands afterward and regain enough flexibility to derig.
My body stays warm enough in a 5/3. On the coldest days (30s here, with high 50s water) I wear a thin fleece under my wetsuit. I'm experimenting with making a neck warmer made from a cut piece of thigh from and old wetsuit. It hasn't gotten cold enough here to try it yet. |
The thin fleece rash guards can be layered under your full suit for added wind blocking and warmth. Just like you'd layer up to go skiing or snowskating. I use up to 4 thin fleeces. 2 short sleeve and 2 long sleeve if the temps call for it. Flexibility goes down only slightly.

actually your momentum in a crash is more sideways, you tend to slide rather than auger

Below 100....?! Luckily here on the OBX, we will be back in the 70 deg air range this weekend with strong S wind for a few days! Water in the 50s east side, and 60s down south side. Back to 4/3m clean!
Weekend before Christmas, if you have the shopping/tasks done early, perhaps its time for a weekend Hatty run for some warmth and wind?!
Bonus, bridge open too (though do you drive fast to get across asap, or slow to have breaking time if a section ahead falls out?!)

I remember a spring day at Chapin many years ago when everything was 40....air temp, water temp, and wind speed. You couldn't pay me enough to do that now....

That's not a bad idea.

Just get the right gear and get used to it. Winter offers some of the best windsurfing of the year. Yesterday in Kalmus was a great example. I was hot the entire time on the water. Used open-palm mitts with a double nylon Ianovated suit, 5 mm boots with 0.5 mm hydroskin socks, a thin neoprene cap that I took off after a while, and a thin neoprene layer (shorts and short-sleeved shirt) underneath that was overkill in 42ºF air temperature. Great flat water fun!
The forecast for this weekend looks great, but with air temps being so much warmer than the water, decoupling could be an issue. Just might have to visit Skaket if that happens.
