There are some additional images of the new fence in this post (scroll to bottom of post):
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/obxbeachlife/1ZT1Kz2PKMw/0Um1sV9VaLIJ

Note, access remains available and the restriction is only on the south side of the lot. As noted, NPS likely fenced the area due to the elevation of the bulkhead and risk/liability associated with either a vehicle rolling off or someone falling.

Guess, its what it is.

PS: in hindsight, looks like much better fence there at Canadian Hole as compared to that Cedar Island fence seen also in the post! Laughing

They've been trying to rope off that area for 3 years in a row, and each year the barrier has "disappeared". They started with cheap pvc and rope, then last year wooden posts and rope, now we're up to posts and pipes. I don't think these will be removed as they are the 3rd try at a barrier. Better then Steel guard rails,(which is what NY would have installed).

Hey guys,

I just got off the phone with the head Park Engineer, Nelson Pindleton. As I thought, the fencing was put in to keep people or vehicles from falling off of the unmarked edge of the bulkhead (which he said was about a 40" drop on the southern end). The ORV ramp was removed and the bulk heading was wrapped around the corner of the lot back towards the highway in order to stop erosion issues. Prior to extending the bulkhead, the ramp was getting washed out and, more importantly, the parking lot was getting undermined during storms, to the point where the parking lot was on the verge of collapsing.

The fencing that is there is the fullest extent of the fencing planned, and just covers the area where the bullhead exists so that as the beach shifts with future storms, there won't be a need to add or move to sections with the most severe drop offs.

He is VERY aware that the access to the southern beach area is currently limited for both pedestrians and vehicles. In order to rectify that situation, they are considering:

for pedestrians:

-removing a section of the fencing and adding a stair set
-creating a path around from the southeast side of the lot

and for ORVs:

-adding an ORV ramp from the southeast side of the lot
-adding an ORV path from the highway
-improving ORV access from the Kite Point area

They are concerned with having too many places for vehicles entering and exiting highway traffic, so he currently prefers adding an ORV ramp from the southeast side of the lot.

Regarding the parking area, they removed the center berm area to create a few more parking spaces and allow for the front row of parking to be moved back 3 or 4 feet from the fence so that there's room to walk between vehicles and the fencing.

Unfortunately, all work is currently on hold until the bridge is reopened. The next step is to finish repaving and then they will tackle some of the other items like potentially removing the posts in the southeast corner to make room for a pedestrian or ORV path to the south beach directly from the parking lot.

He seems quite open to suggestion and is very aware that easy access to the area of beach between the Hole and Kite Point is important not only to visitors, but also emergency personnel for launching rescue skis or getting ambulances into the area if need be.

I remain quite optimistic that this is really all a non-issue and that it will not have an substantial effect on our use of the area.

Really attractive fence...

How deep are the posts? Won't a body dragging jumpy castle pull it right over?...Barbed wire on the top might help.

And then the kite will go into the power lines and all the windsurfers sitting on the metal rails of the fence get smoked. Shocked
