Buildings 1182 – 1188 (Mason Street Warehouses)

Crissy Field (Area District, Presidio of San Francisco
The Presidio Trust is beginning public scoping for the Sports Basement Environmental Assessment (EA), pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). From July 12 to August 12, 2013, the public is invited to provide comments on the scope, the range of alternatives, and the issues that should be examined in the EA.

Proposed Action

The project sponsor, Sports Basement, a locally-owned business that has operated the sporting goods store at the former Commissary (Building 610) on Crissy Field (Area for nearly a decade, is seeking a long-term location in the Presidio. Sports Basement proposes to connect seven separate warehouses (Buildings 1182, 1183, 1184, 1185, 1186, 1187 and 1188) located on Mason Street near the Marina Gate for retail use; preserve and rehabilitate the warehouses in a manner consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation; improve ADA accessibility throughout the site; and retrofit the warehouses to meet current seismic standards.

The historic buildings vary in size from approximately 12,000 gross square feet (sf) to approximately 13,500 gross sf, totaling approximately 88,700 gross sf. Proposed alterations to the property would include seismically upgrading the structures, adding new building systems, connecting the buildings, extending the existing loading docks, inserting new door openings, installing ridge skylights, and selectively removing interior partitions. Following the proposed alterations, there would be approximately 93,000 sf of internal space and 29,300 sf of existing and new elevated exterior decks. Uses will include mercantile, assembly spaces (both indoor and outdoor), business/office space, and accessory uses (storage, mechanical, restrooms, and outdoor circulation).

The scope of this proposed action does not include building new parking. Parking for the facility will be accommodated within an adjacent 213-space parking lot being built as part of the Doyle Drive project.

Planning Process

The Trust expects to have the EA available for public review in fall 2013, at which time comments will be invited for a minimum of 30 days. We will review comments to determine whether any additional analyses, reasonable alternatives or factual corrections have been suggested. If substantive issues are raised which point to the potential for significant impacts, an Environmental Impact Statement would be prepared. Otherwise, a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) is expected.

My concern is more congestion on the street and people jay walking from the store to the east beach parking. And east beach parking being used for this commercial store.

An update to the light/intersection at marina/mason would help and a left hand turn lane for the east beach parking lot too.

There will be a 30 day comment period coming soon, but this proposal specifically says it does not include the parking traffic issue?

What is the SFBA position on this ?

Any insightful comments would be nice to understand the impact/consequences of this change.

Thank you

I am having trouble with CHANGE these days as I age. Laughing

Funny, I am having trouble with AGE as I change! Smile

Sorry, not a Crissy guy so no other insight. Except...

Maybe as part of the deal, Sunset Sailboards, or Boardsports, or both, could get a boutique windsurf shop inside of the Sports Basement!

I hear that getting a business inside a Presidio building is extremely tough. If the board-sport community wants to see a concession at Crissy, it needs to petition/ lobby/ harass both the Presidio Trust AND National Park
Service. ( the buildings south of the road and beach are with the Trust and the beach and parking area are the domain of the NPS.)

I have been amazed that a place like Crissy has no board rental and sales concession. Be it in a building or in a box van. On any given day, we have tourists from around the world, yet the closest board rental and retail spot is in San Rafael ?!

Anybody up for an on-line petition drive?

My question is what's going to go into the old commissary building if Sports Basement moves? No doubt it will be somebody else selling something that will draw even MORE people and traffic into the area.

Everything that's been done to Crissy and the Presidio has been designed to, or resulted in, bringing increasing crowds into the area making it more and more difficult for windsurfers to access, park and rig. They won't stop until they've turned it into Pier 39 with a beach.

Pretty sure the former Commissary is going to be knocked down, otherwise SB would not be moving. Not sure what will be in its place. The former Commissary is one of the few non "historic" buildings in the Presidio.

If they sell windsurfing gear I am all for it. No question old Crissy was better for windsurfing, pre-lagoon days. The changes and improvements have meant bigger crowds of non-sailors. Where once there was rooms for hundreds of cars, competition for parking is now the norm. Miss the Coast Guard Station launch.

There are 3 final proposals for a cultural institution at the old commisary site. Public presentation of the proposals is set for September 23. http://www.presidio.gov/about/Pages/commissary.aspx#.UjfzAtK-1Bm

Sports basement has to move out once the Doyle Drive construction project needs the space for an additional staging area.
