Hey, I have a great idea! Everybody who sails Sherman Island should buy a Powerball ticket every week. When one of us eventually wins, he'll buy all the land across the river, and move all those F-ing windmills out of the path of the wind for The Sign & Powerlines! Hell, a couple miles north and they'll still produce electricity, and we'll have our wind back!

I know, pure genius, it's a gift.

I guess I haven't been up there since the new towers went in Sad

I'm guessing that the rotors are ~100m in diameter and the tips are about 25m from the hill at their lowest point. I think those generators are rated at about 3 MW each. What is the approximate distance between towers? From that I could come up with an approximate diminution of wind speed...

I guess no body asked us before they put up the towers.

OK, time to debate it.

Actually the wind problem has been that there has been a very W to NW wind direction for a couple of years. When the wind comes in W to SW Powerlines still gets great wind. But this has been rare for a while. The W - NW flow is obvious at Marker 10 which is way down river from the windmills.

There has also been a very late start to a continuing marine layer in SF which has nothing to do with the windmills.

When you can wear shorts and a t-shirt at Crissy due to the clear skys and still sail on the prevailing W winds swinging in from the NW in July you know there is a problem.

The Waddell and Ano Nuevo winds have lasted far longer into the season for two years now than normal due to the predominate NW prevailing winds and the lack of a fog layer. This to has nothing to do with the windmills.

So, it is my best guess that it is not a windmill problem but is a more regional or global problem.

well, just doing a simple "magic" momentum disk analysis...looks like (if in fact the turbine can absorb 3 MW), the reduction of wind speed would be 67% right behind the rotor disk, at 25 mph free wind speed (with multiple, simplifying, dumbass, back of the envelope, assumptions)

@AndyDavis

When the winds come from the W - SW they shoot straight down the river. The windmills are out of the line of fire. So there is little to no affect. The winds follow the venture effect of the hills.

When the winds have a N slant they come over the hills, so it does not matter anyway. Powerlines can't get decent wind with any hint of a N. No opportunity for a venture either.

It is more about the direction than the volume.

Sailed a 4.5 at the County Park all day yesterday ( - :
Windmills did not seem to hamper things. As I drove away there were sailers at the Sign and a couple wrapping up at Powerlines. The WSW helped everyone.

if the windmills are on land owned by some one else assuredly the site is leased for a long term, and goes with the land. These are written by lawyers and are iron clad.

same as gas/oil leases are
