Don't overlook camping out. I have yet to pay a cent for any of the 1200-1500 nights I've slept, along with my WS gear, in OR and WA, mostly in spots I like better than buildings. Moving into and out of commercial lodging is a huge time-consuming PITA, IMO.

the redwoods south of Crescent City are amazing, the Klamath river delta is beautiful with lots of wildelife, the Rogue river area is also very nice and the TuTuTun Lodge is one of a kind (but not cheap), the coastal state parks near Coos Bay are also worth visiting

Bingen Hostel. cheap, great location, and usually pretty empty. I'm not sure about dogs, have to check on that. An old school house with a lot of character.

if you only want to spend two days getting to the gorge you may not have much time to do anything but eat and sleep.

the coast route takes quite a bit longer than I-5.

Takes something like 14 hours up thru 97.
Maybe 12.5 hours up 5 to Portland, then an hour East.
Not much time for scenery or fun stuff.
As Victor said, going Coast might take another 6 hours of driving time.

I've always gone up 5, but I'm considering taking the 97 in mid-July.
Can anyone chime in on the pros & cons of either route?
Is the 97 as good a road as the 5? Traffic? Number of lanes?
Which is more scenic?
Which has better places to stop, eat, etc.?
Thanks in advance.

Have you deliberately eliminated 101 ... one of North America's crown jewel routes if one's objective is scenery and things to do, traffic be damned? After all, I-5 is a freaking cattle stampede, not a vacation.

97 is mostly 2 lane with no center divider. 5 is much faster and easier to drive. Quite a few semi's to slow you down. Yes more scenic, but if an accident happens, big delays. Google map the route and you will see the towns and places to stop.

I vote the opposite. 97 over 5 any day. 15 summers of driving from SF to Hood River. I find 97 VERY relaxing IF you can just set your cruise control at about 59 mph and enjoy the trip. If you are impatient or in a hurry this route with its lower speed may not be for you. But you will get better mpg this way. Also the time difference is very small. Plus you get to drive over Mt. Hood.

I seldom drive I-5 when traveling North/South.

Oh yeah check out Crater Lake or the "waterfall Hwy" if you want some scenery and don't mind combining 97 and I5..

You drive slow 😃 I go the speed limit and average 11 to 11.5 hours from the SF East Bay to Hood River. I take a quick rest stop every 100 miles and fuel up about every 300 miles.
